“God, You Take Good Care of Me!”

Contributed by Stephen Robinson

Sue Reeve’s question guides me as I write today’s Listening on the Journey … guest post:

Stephen, how has your TRUST in God grown as His love has helped you navigate the intense season you and your family have been going through?

It’s been over five months now since I heard those fateful words, “Your position has been eliminated immediately…” After almost six months, some 50 interviews, with no firm job offer, I am sure of one thing:  GOD’s LOVE FOR ME HASN’T CHANGED!  Today, I will share what that has looked like practically.

Since being laid off in late March, my wife and I have celebrated our youngest daughter graduating from high school, and a few short weeks ago, I walked my oldest daughter down the aisle. Labor Day weekend was a trip to Whitefish to see our other daughter and her husband. Life hasn’t slowed down, and by the way, neither have expenses.

During this time, though, what I have experienced my entire lifetime remains true. Through all of life’s biggest moments, God has ALWAYS provided. If you ask my wife, she will tell you the two and one-half months’ severance pay was more like six weeks after taxes. Truly, even though my income stopped, the bills haven’t stopped, and it doesn’t make sense, but we are still able to meet all our needs. I have described my severance package as “a fish and two loaves” story. Every time I think resources have run out, there is still more than enough in the bank.

God’s love has also manifested itself in many intangible ways. Grace, peace, joy, and mercy are a few of the adjectives that quickly come to mind. And during this season, I’ve also felt God’s love in many tangible ways, including through an encouraging word from a friend over coffee or spending extra time soaking up truths found in God’s word.

These past few challenging months, words spoken by Jesus, reminding me how much God loves us, keep coming to mind:

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. - Matthew 6:28-33 (NIV)

How about you? Do you have a go-to scripture or a friend you turn to when life gets tough? I hope you find comfort in your quiet time and listen closely for what the Lord might be teaching you about LOVE and TRUST during these moments.

May God bless you no matter what you are experiencing right now!

Stephen
